The Maserati GranSport is a grand tourer produced between 2005 – 2007 and was released to be a flagship follow up to the 3200 GT. Commonly referred to as the 4200 GT, based on the increase in engine size from 3.2 L to 4.2 L, the car promised to rival the performance of the Porsche 911 whilst comfortably seating 4 people over long journeys. The GranSport was updated from its predecessor with improved aerodynamics, re-tuned suspension, engine and transmission, and a sportier interior. Frank Stephenson oversaw the exterior and interior redesign as the newly appointed Director of Ferrari-Maserati Concept Design and Development. With flowing curves, wide rear arches, prominent side skirts and larger 19″ wheels the GranSport was instantly distinguishable from its predecessor whilst still remaining an original, dramatic piece of Italian modern design. Maserati’s V8, closely related to the one used in the Ferrari F430, is the element that really bring the car to life. The V8 produces 395 hp (400 PS) at 7,000 rpm with a new exhaust system and improvements on the intake manifolds and valve seats. An F1 style six-speed Cambio Corsa paddle shift transmission was also equipped to provide quicker shifts and utilise the grunt of the engine which fired the car up to top speed of 290 km/h (180 mph), and a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) acceleration time of 4.8 seconds. The exhaust also featured bypass valves, which are specially tuned to “growl” on start-up and full throttle. The GranSport featured Skyhook active suspension, with a 10 mm lower ride height than its predecessor, it enabled the car to remain flat through the corners whilst retaining exquisite ride quality. The comfort was enhanced by the luxurious interior, finished in full leather fitted with wide, highly contoured sport seat. These changes required a slimmer centre console, constructed in carbon fibre, and elastic door pockets. Carbon fibre was also used to for the dashboard trim and on the new thick-rimmed steering wheel. The ‘LE’ Limited Edition Package also means cars were equipped with Red Callipers, CD Changer, Full Leather Interior, 19″ Trofeo Alloys, Electrochromatic Rear View Mirror, Heated Front Seats with Driver Memory, Seatta Badges, Xenon Headlights, Hi Power Hi-Fi and Rear Parking Sensors. Just 2,432 units of the standard GranSport and only 107 Limited Edition Models were produced between 2005 – 2007 when the Granturismo was introduced as its replacement. After obtaining modern classic status well maintained, low mileage examples are now hard to come by as the majority of these practical grand tourers were often well used daily drivers.
